Bedside Tables

The entire surface has deep, organic carving, playing with and against the prominent grain of the ash. Urethane trays are cast to fit against the surface reflecting the carving and creating new patterns by refracting the light.
Textured Sideboard by Bart Niswonger Furniture

Textured Sideboard

Bart Niswonger Furniture

A sideboard with textured ash panels and a cherry frame. Paint rubbed into the grain of the panels accentuates the liveliness brought out by texturing. The piece features three way mitered corners and tapered legs, scalloped drawer fronts, and stainless steel hardware, all highly glossy. The striking patterns on the panels of this cabinet are simply the natural grain of the ash, mediated by the texture I cut into the surface. As a wooden (primarily) furniture maker, I take wood from trees which grow in a unique and organic ways but always roughly cylindrical, and cut it into rectangles. The grain once ran vertically, up the tree, in concentric cylinders. When the tree is turned into flat sawn lumber, the grain runs lengthwise in the board, the cylinders are fragmented. The nature of the tree is distorted and forced into a convenient shape for our purposes. This piece takes rectangular boards from a single tree and peels back the surface to expose a fresh view of the organic structure within these pieces of lumber and the tree they came from.

Green Cabinet

Bart Niswonger Furniture

A cabinet with transparent urethane panels set in a painted ash frame. The tinted panels are cast from hand-carved ash originals, preserving wood grain, with deep, organic carving. The play of light in and off the panels is fantastic, and the illusion of the woodgrain is hypnotic. I am interested in the line between nature and artifice. My work, and most wooden furniture in general, forces a rigid form on natural wood - making an "artificial" three dimensional form from a natural, organic one. This piece pushes further across the line into artifice by reproducing the natural wood in plastic, fooling the viewer while at the same time unleashing the light manipulating properties of the plastic.
