Watts of Westminster at Decorex – Classic beauty steeped in history
Watts of Westminster have created the finest textiles, wallpapers and passementerie for over 130 years and are one of the exhibitors we are looking forward to seeing at Decorex as part of BlogTour London in September.
Established in 1874 as Watts & Co, the company was commissioned to create textiles and wallpapers, embroideries for prestigious interiors at Hampton Court and Ham House among others. Its current incarnation, as Watts of Westminster draws upon their historic archive to produce remarkable and highly sought after designs.
Watts fabrics and passementerie were used for the spectacular refurbishment of the St Pancras hotel in London and in the Burj Al Arab, the worlds first seven star hotel which is part of the Wallace collection.
And Watts supplied the fabrics for the interior of the Gloriana the royal barge which led the spectacular flotilla to celebrate the Queen’s jubilee earlier this year.
As part of that rather special commission Watts were able to draw upon their history. Watts had been commissioned back in 1952 to create a special blue silk for Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation. To mark her Diamond Jubilee this year, Watts were able to find the last remaining meterage in their archive to create a commemorative cushion as a gift to her majesty.
So yes, Watts of Westminster are a wealth of colour, texture and history with a portfolio of the most prestigious of clients but really you need to come back to the quality of their work and intricacy and beauty of their designs – gladly there’s still room for classically traditional design in this modern world.
