It is no secret that a significant part of Modenus’ British outpost is fond of a dram. Tim hasn’t yet worked out how to charge for listings in bottles of Lagavulin but it wont be long. So this is a story for Tim. One of the UK’s leading hardwood floor specialists, McKay Flooring Ltd, was tasked with finding something fresh and sustainable to do with the 20,000 waste Whiskey Barrels which were finding their way into landfills every year. Whiskey casks are made out of beautiful prime oak and Richard McKay, he of McKay Flooring Ltd, has turned his hand to transforming them into very beautiful floors.
His range of traditional parquet battens retain the branded markings of the various world famous bourbon, sherry and whiskey manufacturers who used the barrels. The beautiful hot metal branded lids are blended with the aged staves and scorched interiors and machined to produce a consistent and usable flooring block or batten. Richard describes them as being full of the character and the flavour of their whiskey barrel origins. This may be our favourite recycling initiative ever.
