Mid-Century Modern at Lord’s – The Home of Cricket

One of our favorite exhibits of the many great shows during London Design Festival was the Mid-Century Modern corner of Design Junction. So we jumped at the opportunity of seeing more Mid-Century design at Lord’s, the home of cricket no less, in London last weekend.

At only around 50 vendors the market at Lord’s was far smaller than the highly popular, always crowded Dulwich show, yet there was still a lot to see. Here are a few of our favorites.

Selection of Mid-Century Modern furniture and lights

Working left to right from the top corner, Selrite Rocking Chair (1950s) by Richard McCarthy from Mid-centry online as is the splendid Goats horns coffee table base , Large Chair, details of which we will update as soon as we discover them from The Modern Warehouse , Surgeons Light by Bleu, A couple of sets of chairs , one by Poul Ljaerholm, the other Richard McCarthey, both 1950′s and a remarkable modernist chess set designed by Austin Cox of Austin Enterprises for ALCOA (Aluminium Association of America) in 1962 all from Mid-Century online.  Strange, highly nonfunctional but still fascinating steel framed French mirror from around 1970 by Michel Boyer from Lestyle25, 1950′s recently refurbished purple chair by Bleu, Vintage French maps from the wonderfully charming Alex at Retromaps, Glassware from Mid-Century Online, a man in a pink t-shirt – you can tell where he is from and finally, an assortment of vintage lights from the very wonderful SkinFlint Designs.

We’ve never been convinced by the ‘interior as a museum’ look, where all the furniture and fittings are from a single era but a vintage piece or two mixed in with contemporary design creates interest. And as we said in a recent blog about SkinFlint’s lights, having pieces with a story, a little piece of history, gives you a connection to a different time and place that you can’t get with reproductions made in China.

Anyway, that’s what Modenus UK did last Sunday Lunchtime. Hope you enjoyed our selection.
