Not your momma’s modern classic – Jonathan Baring Furniture

Marquetry cabinets by Jonathan Baring Furniture

In a very sleepy town in Oxfordshire, so sleepy in fact we had trouble locating Coleshill on Google, lives a small furniture workshop and it’s run by Jonathan Baring. His design and craftsmanship however is everything but sleepy. The cabinets above are vellum marquetry and now there’s two terms  that don’t often happily coexist in the same sentence.

Inlaid credenza by Jonathan Baring Furniture

At the risk of repeating ourselves, the velum marquetry credenza above had to be shown just because we’re so enamored with his ability to combine classic lines with playful elements and such creative use of materials.

We came across Jonathan’s work recently in House&Garden magazine and simply couldn’t get enough. Hope you share our excitement for his work. This credenza is oak and ebony.

Walnut table by Jonathan Baring Furniture

The desk above, yet another surprising material combination is saddle leather and walnut. All pieces are custom to the client’s specifications.

Macassar and Ebony dining table by Jonathan Baring Furniture

And we leave you to drool over this Macassar and Ebony dining table that had been commissioned for a client in Monte Carlo. I know it’s the epitome of posh furniture design but a girl can dream, can’t she?

It was probably my least used item. But I like the stories they tell of how they can change very quickly the mood in the room. Wallpaper has secretly become an agent provocateur, where artists can make the surface flow of creativity rules and nervousness.

The one most serious catalog/chain companies is Design Within Reach and their Mid-Century items which are serious modern design of good quality and NOT trendy. Room & Board also sells classic designs.

At the Carwan Gallery, Paul Loebach showed his spectacular Watson table, made of carbon fiber and bentwood, with double-helix legs that refer to 17th-century English furniture as well as to the modern technology that made this version of them possible
