Imagination will take you everywhere – designs full of love and joy by Suzie Stanford

Imagination is a huge topic in it’s own right and we’re big fans of imagination since it’s just that element of an artists mind that enables us to write about new products, ideas and designs on a daily basis so we in no way intend to knock inspiration. It’s just that today we want to talk about other things. We want to talk about green design and as part of green design we cannot only talk about the use of environmentally friendly and sustainable materials and work practices which are undoubtedly important,  but rather focus on  the reduce and reuse elements in applied design. The use of high quality products to reduce the need for new products we’ll handle in a more serious blog but now, we give the stage to Australian design powerhouse Suzie Stanford.

Suzie, a long time resident of London who has now returned to her native Melbourne Australia has been supplying Paul Smith with jewelry designs for years before venturing out on her own and creating a line of upholstery and decorative pieces that reflect a childhood inspiration. Her father had been an avid collector of all things often deemed unusable by everyone else and, based on the old adage ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’ she has launched a line of quirky, colorful and immensely imaginative pieces, giving new lease on life to discarded household objects like tea towels, tea spoons and tea cups.

I’m sure there’s a place in someone’s design for the two London themed slipper chairs (top) which incidentally had been commissioned by Liberty of London, but an even more intriguing combination are the collages created from ordinary kitchen towels on the two chrome arm chairs above.

We’ve seen stylized versions of teacup lights in the recent past but like that these are the real thing, just with the necessary added wiring to turn them into a light source and as with the reclaimed teaspoon chandelier below, we can’t help but smile about and enjoy the design, color, and most importantly the zeal of the designer herself.

Suzie says about her work :  “I don’t think I really make anything new.  I just make new connections. I put things together which are not supposed to be together and hope that by my works’ celebration of colour and the juxtaposing the old with the new, my pieces make people smile. Each piece whether it be a chair, light or neckpiece, is all handmade in my sun drenched Melbourne studio, filled with imagination and love.

With endless joy,
