Fine Edge Designs – bespoke furniture and floating stairs

Glass Stairs by Fine Edge Designs

Fine Edge Designs design, manufacture and install beautiful bespoke freestanding and fitted furniture. The company is headed up by Colin Morrell who is both a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers and a graduate of  the prestigious Parnham College which was set up by John Makepeace, OBE, the  subject of a recent Modenus Blog.  That’s impressive enough for those who are impressed by that sort of thing. But it’s the elegance and refinement evident in his work which is the true testimony to his pedigree and application.

The  glass staircase shown above is constructed with painted birch ply stringer, treads in triple layer pvb laminated glass, balustrade in toughened 15mm glass. The important thing is that it is absolutely stunning, it seems to float effortlessly. Imagine walking up it. Going from one floor to another becomes a glamorous event.

Floating Stairs by Fine Edge DesignsOn the subject of stairs, there is something almost magical about these.  Once upon a time a builder was busy explaining to me the many reasons he hated and resented architects. We went through the obvious things like warm offices and nice cars before we got to the real crux of the issue. ‘and they want everything held up by sky hooks’ he ranted. Well here we have a staircase which really looks like it may be held up by sky hooks. You know it is cantilevered. You may also spot that the  stair treads are clad in solid American black walnut. The attachements of the stainless steel handrail are cunningly hidden by the tiles, of course.

Stripes Table by Fine Edge Designs

Strips of coloured, live edge and clear acrylic, various timbers and corian surrounded by a red lacquered steam bent ash edge supported by brushed stainless steel legs make the “Of Bridge Coffee Table” a piece of furniture which plays with the light and brightens any setting the fortunate owner chooses to put it in. Never say we don’t give you the techy specs, at least sometimes. This one is D 440mm x H 450mm.

Teak Cabinets by Fine Edge DesignsAnd finally a lovely, substantial, very solid piece of furniture. Actually, its four cabinets  made out of solid and veneered Burmese Teak, designed to match a range of existing cabinets in a grade II listed house in north London. Overall dimensions are W 3680mm x D 660mm x H 2280mm or, in other words, big.

Fine Edge tell us that some of their clients provide them with photos or sketches of what they require and know exactly what materials they want to use. In other cases they provide initial design ideas and make recommendations, based on their experience, regarding the choice of woods, veneers, metals, lacquers and fittings.  They will even  arrange tours of their workshops in Germany and the UK. This is a bespoke service for people who recognise quality.
