Maison & Objet Paris – Yellows, Blacks and Singularity

Maison & Objet is one of the most important international design and decoration events in the professional calendar. The bi-annual design show (January and September) allows distributors, hoteliers, interiors designer and architects to discover the latest collections by small designers and the major brands.

As always there was a lot to see and M&O’s design theme of Singularity is a poignant one; about wanting to go against the grain of “the same for all everywhere”.  There were two key areas where this was felt strongly – in the Obsessions Privées exhibition by Elizabeth Leriche and Craft, l’espace métiers d’art where items were one of a kind.

Across all the halls though a real stand out colour trend was the combination of high contrast Yellow and Black.

Yellow and Black is probably the most powerful color combination. Whilst the colour yellow is most closely associated with  sunshine and therefore joy and happiness,  pure yellow is an attention getter and is seen before other colors when placed against black; this combination is often used to issue a warning. In interiors this creates a very dramatic and daring setting and was shown by the luxury brand JNL and also by Guadarte – both creating high octane drama. In the home accessories halls this colour duo was made less startling and more palatable to a wider audience by the introduction of grey and/or white to the combination.
