Richard Brendon – love for lonely saucers and forgotten patterns

Our attention was drawn to Richard Brendon‘s work by Charlotte Abrahams and her excellent blog. Credit where it is due. Based off London’s famous Portobello Road, Richard spends much of his time in the local antique markets. His great interest is in objects and styles that were once loved but are no longer cherished. “Reflect’ his mirrored cups partnered with otherwise unloved saucers is a remarkable outcome of his fascination.

Those of us who spend time in antique markets and goodwill stores will have come across lonely saucers. Richard noticed that there seemed to be lot more surviving patterned saucers than the cups they were originally paired with. His solution was to create highly reflective cups. Made from bone china in Stoke on Trent, traditional home of the British pottery industry – indeed often known as ‘The Potteries’. The cups are hand painted with platinum and then polished to a highly reflective surface. The saucers are the best of Richard’s finds, sourced from across the UK. The result is rather lovely, evocative of a time gone by yet fresh and modern. And that is also true of Richard’s “Details from Willow” project.

Willow Pattern was the most popular design for ceramics in the United Kingdom during both the 19th and 20th Centuries.  It’s popularity  faded and now, once cherished dinner services  can be found gracing goodwill stores. Richard photographs details from the traditional patterns and creates ceramic transfers to new bone china cups which, like his reflect series, are made in Stoke on Trent.

Once again, it is the creation of something very modern with elements of the past, a combination of nostalgia and contemporary style.

Richard Brendon creates new pieces to cherish which evoke memories and, indeed, a celebration of the past. We thank him for that.
