Burning desire

How do you react when someone tells you they really want a fire pit?

When the sun goes down and the air turns a  bit chilly fire pits become the centre of attention. People gather round, warm their hands and chat as the gaze into the flames. That’s great.

But how about when they aren’t lit? How about when they are grubby metal dishes full of ash and rain water? And isn’t that what fire pits are – big black metal dishes for firewood and scraps? And actually, how often do people make the effort to light them?

Solus Decor produce fire pits that are beautiful on or off, that are easy to light, burn natural gas, liquid propane or ethanol and  are made out of one of our favourite materials, concrete. Yes, concrete.

What do you associate with concrete? Something rough, clumsy and crude? Breeze blocks maybe?

Well look at these and change your mind.

Solus Decor are a Vancouver based design and manufacturing studio committed to designing and crafting the world’s finest cast concrete products. Their fireplace mantels, fireplace surrounds, fire pits and tiles grace living rooms, lobbies and outdoor rooms across North America. With over a decade of experimentation and refinement they have produced gracefull and elegant hand crafted products which they are happy to deliver right across North America.

I actually am coming around to concrete in various types! I have a few clients who have opted for concrete countertops and in the right setting, they look fabulous! I also love concrete stained floors for boutiques and ultra modern homes. They key is to incorporate other soft furnishings to gear the room away from looking so “cold”!

    Great Post!

yes I think concrete certainly has its merits when used for the right project and the right client. It has an amazing versatility and with a really good precast artist you’re bound to end up with a show stopping piece.

Nice work by Solus for sure and nice comments by Lindsay and the boss – Veronika. Very apt for V. to point out that a lot comes down to the artisan behind the concrete. These guys obviously know their stuff!

“The boss” thanks you for the kind words. I’ve been a big fan of concrete for many years (even before it was more of a mainstream product) , love it’s versatility and chameleon like behaviour and always fight it’s bad press. Just like with any other product it’s about expectations. I would love to see pre cast concrete fabricators within the Modenus catalog, especially ones that are capable of reliable shipping.
