Decorex 2013: Barneby Gates- Tradition meets whimsy
By Florence von Pelet
Barneby Gates is the ultimate culmination of British design, color and humor and printed onto paper. Ex British Vogue editor Vanessa Barneby and colleague Alice Gates, both graduates from Edinburgh University, have combined their artistic flair and love for patterns in this wildly imaginative and refined collection of wallpaper.
The Deer Damask collection is rich in color with the Claret & Gold edition and Duck Egg Blue & Antique Gold option. The Deer skulls add a bit of humor to the print design while still remaining dignified and almost formal.
A whimsical take on “Houndstooth” , the Dog Prints collection creates the illusion of the well known pattern while up close the image depicts the heads of elegant race dogs.
The Fox and Hen collection is classically styled and tells a story. The fox head and running hen reminded us of the humor in the road runner and coyote, a sort of “you’re never going to catch me” theme. Wonder if Barneby Gates might do us a US version with those two characters? We love the playful illustrations combined with traditional pattern against the rich brick red or white background. We’ll be honest, we could go on all day about several more collections from these talented ladies but we must further on and plunge into more delightful design such as this.
