I begin the sculpting process with a preparatory drawing which then leads to gluing up to three units of 5/8” laminated birch from Finland. Each unit contains 10 layers of wood and the form is shaped with additional pieces of laminate, if needed, to achieve the desired dimension. The glue lines adhering each piece of birch provide the sculpture with the striped effect. Some of the wood sculptures become original models for my bronzes.
The entire process is performed by me except for the final casting in bronze. My goal is not to strive for anatomical accuracy but rather to create a sense of pleasing proportion.
