Rose Pomegranate suzani

St. Frank

This vintage piece was created in Uzbekistan and consists of delicate silk embroidery on a silk-cotton blend backing. Suzani embroidery, which is made with a tambour hook, is a classic Central Asian textile characterized by flowers and meandering vines. This piece reveals a pomegranate motif, a common element in suzani embroidery, representing fertility with its many seeds. The flower designs are also symbolic of fertility and fruitfulness. Suzani textiles are traditionally used as wall hangings or as a woman's marriage dowry. This decorative embroidery is also though to possess a protective element.

This delicate piece is created in the Bamako workshop of Aboubakar Fofana. A calligrapher, artist, and textile designer, Fofana studied in Japan and France, as well as Mali. Fofana is driven by a passion to preserve and revitalize West Africa’s nearly lost tradition of natural indigo dyeing. The artist studied with the finest living indigo dye masters. In ancient times, from opulent Egypt to stark West Africa, fabric has been dyed a mysterious, beautiful blue. This indigo, or “gold blue,” is a sign of prestige and a symbol of the passage of the link between heaven and earth.

Johanna Bramble’s work combines a modern aesthetic with traditional textile weaving. The artist, a Senegalese designer, is passionate about preserving time-honored weaving methods. She has a strong contemporary curiosity, leading her to incorporate new materials into her creations. This allows her to work through heritage textiles to reveal new insights. Here, her work is exhibited inside out to reveal the process of making. Woven textiles, or serru rabal in the Wolof language, are the most cared for objects in a Senegalese home. Bramble’s contemporary pattern displays the hexagon – a symbol of wisdom, life, & health.

This vintage piece was created in Uzbekistan and consists of delicate silk embroidery on a silk-cotton blend backing. Suzani embroidery, which is made with a tambour hook, is a classic Central Asian textile characterized by flowers and meandering vines. A tree of life motif is presented here. Suzani tree of life designs represent three spheres: the roots spring from the underworld, the trunk rises through the terrestrial world, and the branches reach the heavens. The treetops are crowned with a trefoil arch. These textiles are traditionally used as wall hangings or as a woman's marriage dowry.

This intricate embroidery is handmade by the indigenous Otomí people of Tenango de Doria in central Mexico. The symbolism and iconography in this textile design reflect time-honored traditions and beliefs of harmony with nature. The whimsical flora and fauna embroidered motifs can be traced back to pre-Aztec Mesoamerica and are said to originate from cave paintings. Each character bears significance. For example, the deer is said to carry wealth; the rooster, to announce a good harvest. Therefore, this piece offers not only its homage to the Otomí heritage, but also the notion of luck and prosperity.
