Listen | Closely

Designers at Large

Designers at Large has produced a limited edition of 75 ‘Listen | Closely’ lamp shades made from the legacy sails roof fabric from Vancouver's Canada Place. The title of the project is meant to encourage us to stop and reconsider the people and objects we encounter in our daily lives. Only when we Listen | Closely can we truly appreciate the potential of our surroundings. All proceeds from the sales will be donated to the HomeStart Foundation. http://www.homestart.ca/ 20 of the lamp shades were on display as part of the ReFab: Design for Sail exhibit at the 2011 IDSwest show. The Listen | Closely lamp shade is a Teflon-coated, waterproof, fire-rated, composite material made of fibreglass and polytetrafluoroetheylene called Sheerfill II-HT. Shades are provided with a CSA approved light fixture, including 15’ of cord and two hooks and clips for hanging. They are rated for indoor use only. The recommended light bulb is an 11W compact fluorescent. The fixture can be retrofitted to fit a standard ceiling box, or fitted with a toggle switch and plugged into a standard outlet. Designers at Large would like to thank the following companies who generously donated their services in the fabrication of the shades: American Fabricators www.amfab.ca Associated Plastics www.associatedplastics.com/ Downtown Custom Metal Works www.downtowncustommetalworks.ca/ Viking Profiles www.vikingprofiles.com/
FlatFish 1.2 (Convertible Chair) by Designers at Large

FlatFish 1.2 (Convertible Chair)

Designers at Large

The FlatFish 1.2 is the aluminum version of its predecessor the FlatFish 1.1. Operating in the same fashion as FlatFish 1.2 this multi-use piece of convertible furniture works as a dining chair, side table, small coffee table or bench. Typically used in the table or bench configuration the FlatFish 1.2 cleverly camouflages a dining chair lying in wait for that moment when an extra chair is needed - perhaps for that next dinner party. In a process similar to tailoring a suit, the 3 dimensional forms of the seat and chair back, which also serves as the tabletop, of the FlatFish 1.2 are created from 2 dimensional patterns. These are waterjet cut from light gauge aluminum, which are then formed and welded together. The legs are also waterjet cut and formed from 3/16” plate steel. FlatFish 1.2 has a durable powder coat finish and is available in a variety of colours. The waterjet cutting process also allows us to optimize the use of material, thus minimizing waste. Any scrap material from the cutting process is used to create additional products such as jewelry pieces. We call these Rem[a]inders. For us these remainders remind us to take responsibility for the allocation of our precious resources.

Like its namesake, FlatFish 1.1 has adapted to meet the challenges of modern living. Created to meet the needs of an increasing number of people living in small spaces the FlatFish 1.1 is a multi-use piece of convertible furniture that works equally well as a dining chair, side table, small coffee table or bench. Typically used in the table or bench configuration the FlatFish 1.1 cleverly camouflages a dining chair lying in wait for that moment when an extra chair is needed, say for that next dinner party. The seat and chair back/tabletop of the FlatFish 1.1 are hand crafted from molded plywood and can be custom finished in a variety of veneers and high gloss colours. The legs are waterjet cut from ¼” plate steel and are available in a variety of plated or powder coat finishes.
