In the early 1980s aspiring entrepreneurs in Ghana, West Africa created “mobile cinemas.” The curators of these traveling movie theaters would journey from village to village with a television, VCR and a gasoline powered generator showing various movies from Hollywood films.

As a promotional effort local artists were commissioned to paint movie posters in order to entice the local community to attend the showings. The media typically consisted of bright and bold oil paints on recycled textile “flour sacks.” The artists were given creative freedom to illustrate the movies as desired.

This art movement lasted until the mid 1990s when these commissioned masterpieces were finally replaced by printed collateral.More
