A handful of floating, helium filled balls that filter and perfume the air, gently drifting to the ground as they need to be changed. Sadly they are only a concept, but the good news is that they won Jan Ankiersztajn, from Poland, the Electrolux Design Lab competition.
While we have never been big fans of air fresheners, preferring a spot of cleaning and some fresh air, these are the very antithesis of the ugly chunks of plastic we are all used to seeing. The global design competition is held annually, and is open to undergraduate and graduate industrial design students who are invited to present innovative ideas for household appliances of the future. The 2012 brief called for innovative home appliances that create ‘fuller sensory experience’.
For his imagination, innovation and creativity, winner Jan Ankiersztajn received a cheque for 5,000 Euros, a six month paid internship with Electrolux and, apparently, a very large bunch of flowers. We will be on the lookout for luminescent floating air fresheners some time in the future.
