Jake Phipps set up his London based design studio just five years ago. His first product, the rather elegant ISIS chair is now being manufactured by Gebruder Thonet – Vienna and is believed to be the thinnest folding chair in production. When folded flat it is, indeed, very flat, just 3cm. That’s a spot over an inch for you imperial refuseniks and rebels. The idea behind the studio was to create design for large scale manufacture and the first few suggest there are going to be some very interesting pieces rolling off the production lines.
This is Orson, it’s a seat in glass reinforced plastic. And while it doesn’t immediately appeal to those of us for whom ‘comfy’ or even ‘cheerful’ are priorities, its stark simplicity is bound to win fans.
This one’s not for mass production. Stellar comes in a limited edition of 25. There are 750 individual mirrors around the centre, apparently inspired by the way in which diamonds are cut. The result is stunning.
And finally, in this brief round up, a light from Jake Phipps. Described as ‘Sculptural ambient lighting’ it is made from moulded plastic with etched lacquer edging. There is a distinctive style emerging here. We have no doubt that the very confident clean cut designs from Jake Phipps are going to make him a very sought after name in design for years to come.
