Lobmeyr from Austria has been manufacturing glassware and lighting since 1823 and is notable for magnificent and often very traditional custom lighting creations in museums, mosques and celebrity homes. ‘Basket’ however, designed by Marco Dessi is anything but traditional. The overall shape is inspired by Moorish lanterns but the stacked glass tubes by homage to Frank Lloyd Wright’s tube-glass windows in the SC Johnson administrative building. Dessi succeeded in merging two very different styles and created something new and fresh in the process.
The stacked glass tubes are held together only by silk rope which is available in a number of colors. We were intrigued to see the red rope used with brass, another way to introduce an unexpected splash of color.
