IMM is, as Modenus readers will already know, one of the great European interior design trade shows. Last year the organisers introduced a new feature, an entire house built inside the exhibition, showcasing the work of a guest of honour. In 2012 it was created by British design team Doshi Levien, this year ‘Das Haus’ as it is known, is the creation of Venetian designer Luca Nichetto. Modenus was privileged to be invited to visit his home town to hear him introduce his designs and concepts which will be unveiled at IMM in January.
Luca Nichetto was introduced to the traditions and wonders of Venetian glass by his grandfather and, in many ways, was following in his footsteps when he started his own Venetian design firm back in 2006. Half a decade later he also opened a studio in Stockholm and now travels between the two. The influences of Scandinavia and the traditions of Italy are evident in his work.
Plans and models for Das Haus reveal a North European simplicity of structure combined with Italian flair and passion. He has set about creating a house with a green heart. Luca has also moved away from rooms which impose function upon the people who live in them, preferring open spaces with zones for differing uses.
Plants are an integral part of Nichetto’s design in the green centre, throughout the space and even as part of the exterior walls. Big windows on the buildings exterior provide views of plants both from the inside and out. They soften the structure as well as giving it a natural feel.
Nichetto is known as a prolific designer for many of Europe’s respected brands including Bosa, Foscarini, Established and Sons, Noroso and La Chance. And while he is including his own designs he is also acknowledging the ‘masters of design’ as he calls them and work, especially art work and illustrations by his friends. That’s significant because when you listen to the man, what comes across is his interest in what others have to contribute, there is a marked lack of the arrogance that can restrict the vision of creators who may pay too much attention to their own press.
When Luca talks about Das Haus, there is clear pride and enthusiasm. So far, all we have to show you are the designer’s models. In just a few months time, at the start of 2013 the completed structure will take pride of place at IMM in Cologne where Modenus, BlogTour and over 100,000 other visitors will be very excited to see how Luca Nichetto’s house with a green heart has turned out.
