There is a nightmarish quality to Nick Davis‘ Avian Rumble Chess Set. Look closely and you can see Bottom from Shakespeare’s Midsummer’s Night Dream alongside The Karate Kid. Nick tells us that the pawns were originally going to be brandishing cricket bats but following a trip to a New York trade show he changed his mind and his minions now sport baseball bats. The pieces, and much of the table, are made from Nick’s signature material – bronze. We saw the set at Tent, part of London Design Festival, part of the itinerary of our first ever Blogtour. Each of the pieces are remarkable, evidencing Nick’s craftsmanship, humour and love of the darkly surreal. Together they make up something of a masterpiece. There is a tradition of chess sets which entertain and amuse as they stray from the traditional representations but we have never seen a set as dark and compelling as this.
