Sometimes the things we love are right on our doorsteps. Modenus UK is based in Brighton and just down the road in the neighbouring town known locally as ‘Hove Actually’, as in ‘do you live in Brighton?’ ‘no, Hove actually’, is one of our favourite shops, Rume. Now Rume stock a fantastic range of their own and other companies furniture. They also do a splendid range of quirky and distinctly desirable accessories. And in amongst them are these fellows. Made by the original Japanese manufacturer these tin toys were popular in the fifties when, no doubt, they were a health and safety hazard for children of all ages. Now they are very much a collectors item for those of us who regard growing up as something of a mixed blessing.
This is TV Robot, as he walks towards you strange sci-fi images scroll across the screen A great reminder of the days when TV sets were as exotic and exciting as robots. Oh, I guess that makes me old. Oh well…
Cockpit Robot. I love the operator strapped into the chest. Either he, or she, is very very small or this is based on a terrifyingly massive robot – Yikes! It walks, it flashes, it makes threatening ratatatat sounds. What more could you want?
Well maybe everything we’ve shown you so far is just a little too modern, what with their new fangled AA batteries and all. Well Hex Head Robot, for our money the scariest of them all requires nothing more than a twist of his clockwork mechanism for pure animated terror.
I love these. Thank you Rume. I’ll get back to work now.
