LCD tassels, fiber optics and the right time for a cocktail – Refer + Staer

Ice Clear 25 by Refer + Staer, installed in the palatial offices of Kutnicki Bernstein Architects in New York City

We keep coming across really stunning lighting. Alongside wall papers, it seems to be the sector with the greatest creativity in the production of   high quality products. The latest lighting company to come to our attention is Refer + Staer.  Based in Denmark, their designs are distinctly  Scandinavian but with an added sense of drama.

The chandelier shown above is Ice Clear 25, installed in the palatial offices of Kutnicki Bernstein Architects in New York City. You can trust an architect to spot a good light and this one is made up of 25 separate pendants made from hand blown glass.

Ice blue focus chandelier by Refer + Staer

The chandelier chosen by the New York  architects is a custom version of the Ice range of which Ice Blue is another variant. Its asymmetrical form actually enhances its natural, simple feel. The colour-anodised aluminium matching the colour of the glass demonstrates the attention to detail that is needed to make something which has so much visual impact and simplicity.

Black Fiber Light by Refer + Staer

An imaginative spin on the traditional lampshade, Black Fiber features LCD tassels and comes either with, or without a centre light. The effect is a romantic ‘twinkle’ rather than a full on light. We ca imagine it in a restaurant or lounge setting and, once again, find our minds wandering to our need for a six o’ clock martini. OK, five-thirty.

Etage Light by Refer + Staer

And there is something undeniably upmarket about Etage. The gold coloured glass and matching metal work shout glamour but there is still a simplicity that is distinctly Scandinavian. In an attempt to be wity I researched the Danish word for ‘glamour’, it is , apparently, ‘glamour’. The Danish words for ‘lighting which combines stylish simplicity and glamour’ are, of course, ‘Refer +Staer’.
