“Future, meet Nature!” – Kenneth Cobonpue at Salone Del Mobile

Phoenix, a concept car by Kenith Cobonpue,

What is a car doing in an interior design blog? What was a car doing at an interior design show?  This is an exception.  As a rule, cars at interior design shows are as clichéd as music, flash and mystery navigation on French websites. We turned the corner at a show in the Tortona district in Milan and there was a collective intake of breath. This is Phoenix, a concept car by Kenneth Cobonpue in collaboration with Alberth Birkner, made in just ten days out of bamboo, rattan, steel and nylon, is the first bio-degradable car in the world and was made entirely by hand.  It is a show stopper and the first time a car had ever stopped us in our tracks and directed our attention to the furniture, lights and accessories that surround it. That said, if you know Kenneth Cobonpue’s work you will know that its a wonderful thing to have your attention drawn towards. Let us do the same for you.

Bloom, an extraordinary flower like chair is made up of hundreds of fine  stitches running from the centre of the seat. The steel base works well with the fragile looking seat which, should you be interested, looked just as delicate and fragile after our backsides had given it a thorough road test.

Dragon's Tail Desk Light

Dragon’s Tail Desk Light, designed by Luisa de Los Santos Robinson is a creation of Kenneth Cobonpue’s Hive – a facility which designs and produces under his creative direction. Its output is distinctive, inspired by the natural world and often using the skills and traditions of hand made craft. We love this light, amongst the many acres  of other lights in Milan, many of them very beautiful, this is what we found ourselves wishing for our desk top or living room.

Biba Screen from HiveBiba Screen is another treasure from Hive but this time designed by Kenneth Cobonpue himself. Inspired by the colours of spiders and insects, but don’t let that put you off, it is made out of rattan vines tied to a metal frame. It is one of a number of screens that are available from Kenneth Cobonpue and Hive. Our regret is that we did not have more time to look at their remarkable nature inspired and incredibly sexy furniture while we were in Milan. The good news is that it is going to be on Modenus very soon. You will know when, you will hear us celebrating wherever you are. We love everyone on Modenus, of course. But we are in love with Kenneth Cobonpue.
