Catherine Carr: The Crafts Council Hot House – crocheting with glass

Crocheting and knitting with glass, you wouldn’t think it was even possible. But Catherine Carr, from The Crafts Council Hot House Scheme does it and produces very beautiful work as a result. We are featuring our pick of the craftspeople the British Crafts Council have included in their latest Hot House scheme giving six months of intensive business and creative support. An initiative which deserves wide support.

Catherine was inspired by the role of women in textiles, especially her Grandmother who taught her to knit and crochet and  bequeathed her the patterns she uses. Each piece is knitted or crocheted before being  heated and manipulated through several firings at a very high temperature, eventually emerging as a formed glass vessel.  The vessels are fascinating objects in themselves but we can’t help wondering if there might be an interesting application for this technique in the word of lighting?

Funny you should say that – lighting is on its way!
