Take me back in time – the One Room Hotel installation at London Design Festival

One Room Hotel, Shoreditch by JAMESPLUMB

As we’ve shown with our stop off at Milk Concept Boutique once before, veering away from the beaten path at London’s Design Festival had the potential of real surprises and this was a most remarkable little installation. Design team JAMESPLUMB, which is made up of two London designers James Russell and Hannah Plumb who have been making waves at previous year’s Tent London exhibits as well as in Milan earlier this year.

The “One Room Hotel” is adjacent to the new Shoreditch clothing store Hostem which was also designed by JAMESPLUMB and was created as an exhibit specifically for the London Design Festival. But a most unusual exhibit in that select visitors were handed the key to the place and were invited to stay a night. A little creepy but also very cool, we feel.

The design duo wanted to take the concept of an exhibit one step further by allowing people to live in it for a night, surrounded by lovingly restored treasures and luxurious necessities like bath products by Aesop and sumptuous bed linens by Matteo.

The minimal floor spaced housed a main room which was all but filled by a massive four poster bed, a small farm kitchen and a bath nook.

Part stage set, part design exhibit, the little “Hotel” evokes a feeling of romance, simplicity and nostalgia for the Dickensian England of another time. And as is often the case, a nostalgia for a time that never was, but we can dream can’t we?
