New friends – the people we’ve met on Twitter: Lee Nicholson at Filmore Clark

Today we begin what will hopefully become a regular feature on Modenus Blog, a spotlight of our friends on Twitter. It’s a colorful mix of designers, manufacturers, artists, bloggers and social media people who have become so instrumental in putting Modenus on the map by sharing what we write or what we showcase in our catalog. Since we’re fully social media driven we could never have made it to this point without the help of a few hundred very supportive friends, you know who you are, and for this we want to thank them individually by turning the spotlight on them, letting them share their story and maybe help make some of these virtual friendships just a bit more tangible. We look forward to your comments below if feel you want to add something nice or ask a question.

Today’s featured Tweep: Lee Nicholson from Filmore Clark Artisan Tile

Modenus: Tell us about yourself. What do you do? Where do you live?

I am  an american artisan tile studio owner in West Hollywood, CA. I have been in many facets of the “tile world” for over 15 years from showroom salesperson, showroom manager to head of Marketing & Purchasing for Country Floors. I live in the beautiful coastal city of Santa Monica and love it!

What’s a typical day in your life?

Hmm, this usually starts by waking at @ 5:30am for a walk with Gladys. Our morning quiet time and little exercise. Then off to the office before 8am to organize my day. Days in the studio range from focusing on PR & Marketing efforts to gathering ideas for the day’s client meetings. Any “free” time is spent reorganizing the displays in the studio to creating new plaques and/or samples from the factories

What makes you laugh? What makes you cry? What makes you happy?

Gladys, my Airedale makes me do all 3. Such joy in this lovely creature. The support of my husband has been astonishing throughout this, could not have done it without his support! He has kept me laughing and positive when I thought I was crazy for opening a business in this rather topsy-turvy economy. You really can create something if you put your mind and energy to it! Crying I seem to do allot of as I am really soft hearted. Just seeing someone hold the door for an elderly person can bring me to tears. My other passion is cooking. Love to cook just about anything.

I also find happiness in seeing a client find a tile that truly fits their home and design aesthetic. It can be overwhelming as a homeowner or even designer to choose between all the fantastic tile options. Guiding you thru the showroom, asking about your home, how you want it to feel and help you  is one of my biggest pleasures.

What was the  inspiration for you to use Twitter as a communication platform?

My web & PR person, Callie Miller insisted that Twitter was a crucial part of my success. I was hesitant but oh boy was I wrong. Twitter has brought me immeasurable knowledge and contacts that I would never have found otherwise. Also working alone can be tough especially the first year. My Twitter friends have kept me inspired and encouraged!

Where do you want to be in ten years from now?

Doing what I love which is representing all the small artisan tile makers in the US. It is so important not to lose sight of all the wonderful goods produced in our own backyard.

Filmore Clark hopes to bring a new life to the custom tile selection process. Keeping it local is the main focus of the showroom. By showcasing only domestically manufactured collections, Filmore Clark takes to heart the true meaning of a smaller footprint and being green.
