One of the first manufacturers to catch our attention at Dwell on Design last month, was Holme Designs out of Sherman Oaks, California. We had to revisit this urban lumber design. Their furniture and lighting collection is sculptural, fun, warm and organic. Heather and Chris Holme strive to make their design both functional and artistic and both characteristics are clearly evident in the pieces below.
The design savvy couple makes it a point to spend time to visualize the environment, function and utility of each piece they design. We’re crazy about the circular “I’m not Square” bookcase which sure isn’t nearly as practical as a straight one but come on, what a fabulous accent piece. Just please, oh please, don’t add a mirror at the center, we know it’s tempting, but…no.
This dresser or desk is functional with plenty of storage but it’s also an artistic focal point in the space with its unique, almost random, placement of drawers in varying sizes and shapes and wood grain that’s allowed to run amok. In a good way.
This floor lamp, just recently named Glo Peep, is organic and fluid in shape where a sense of function meets creativity and an organic feel. Holme Design is a manufacturer that blends environment and form with function without taking itself too seriously.
