I’ve just come across Graphic Relief, a London based surface design company that works mostly in concrete and thought I’d share their proprietary technology with our readers. I’ve long loved the dark and moody designs by Timorous Beasties but seeing them applied to concrete adds so much texture and dimension, I’m left speechless. Check out the minute details below and don’t forget that this is concrete we’re talking about here. Simply stunning. Above is the Tree of Life pattern by Timorous Beasties.

Spring Blossom, also a Timorous Beasties fabric pattern, get’s a whole new lease on it’s already glorious life by being recreate with this much attention to detail. I have no idea how it’s done but maybe the team at Graphic Relief can explain a bit more.

Graphic Relief partner with a variety of surface designers to re-create their work in concrete and, I’ve read on their website, other materials are being planned. These pieces are renditions of the work of renowned illustrator and textile designer Sarah Arnett. My imagination is running away with me, just think of the possibilities for this….tile designs, large scale installations. Just about any piece of art, cast in stone.

And finally, the work of illustrator Yehrin Tong, New Scientist (left) and Apple (right) are another tribute to the fabulous level of detail the team at Graphic Relief can create. For more on this head over to their website.

Bath design has just entered a new level of style/sex appeal/glamour or feel free to insert the attribute that best suits your first impression of Graff’s new AMETIS collection. The sleek shower column features rain head, body sprays, a dock for an optional hand shower and an integrated chromatherapy lighting system. To me, this is one of the most stunning bath fixture collections I’ve seen and I wholeheartedly applaud Graff for creating something that’s new, fresh, exhilarating and, dare I say it, different. Have a look below for more on AMETIS.
GRAFF has reached out to David Oppizzi of DCUBE to create the collection. To Davide, the design is “a symbol of the fusion between the Universe above and the oceans below; a futuristic ode to high design in the bathroom”.

Two rows of body sprays complement the rain head element without deterring from the shower’s sleek design for what I can only imagine to be a very gentle, embracing shower experience and I love the option of being able to switch from rain head to waterfall, all in a single element.

“Fluid and sensuous, AMETIS guides the water through the gentle curves of the faucet, providing a visual representation of the idea that life is a cycle” says Davide. I love the faucet design for it’s sculptural quality and the very appropriate use of highly polished chrome that emphasizes the faucet’s shadow play.

The faucet will be available in three finishes – polished chrome or powder coated matte black and white and it features an electronic system with a coloured ring which changes from red to blue and vice versa depending on changes in the water temperatures.
AMETIS won’t be available in the US until late Spring, early Summer but I can see where designers would want to start thinking about incorporating the collection in their upcoming concepts right now if they’re looking to wow a discerning client. Cost of the system: From $15,000 for the shower and from $1,500 for the faucet with LED option.

By now, you must know Modenus loves a good light. And if it happens to be LED? Even better. For a few examples, we recently came across some LED options from Corbett Lighting, Troy Lighting and CSL® (Creative Systems Lighting), and you’ll be pleased to know that the next generation of LEDs are whiter, brighter and cheaper, with more lumens per watt, more effective heat sinking and more flexibility (we’re talking dimmable). “Since LEDs are so compact, we are no longer limited to the same old forms for decorative fixtures,” saidSteve Nadell, President of Troy-CSL in a recent conversation. “We can now design and fabricate fixtures in new shapes, sizes and configurations that we couldn’t do before with incandescent and compact fluorescent bulbs.” So, contrary to conventional thinking, LED technology and decorative lighting DO go hand in hand and we’re about to show you a few luminous examples.
Stiletto by Corbett Lighting
With a champagne silver leaf finish and faceted crystal that picks up the LED light, this wall sconce is all drama. It’s also dimmable – a necessity for most inspired design schemes.
Raleigh by Troy Lighting
Oh, steampunk style will you never die? Somehow, the industrial era keeps inspiring product designers; the lighting category is no exception. Raleigh by Troy Lighting is a perfect example of old meets new: the hand-forged ironwork, rustic silver finish and back plate root it in the past, but the dimmable LEDs bring it right back into the present.
Tango by Corbett Lighting
Tango by Corbett Lighting turned a lot of heads last year – even Tree Hugger’s. Using laser-cut metal formed into a seamless sphere, Tango brilliantly incorporates an LED light source concealed behind a textured bronze exterior and silver leaf finish interior.
Orb by CSL® (Creative Systems Lighting)
The Orb, part of CSL’s Architectural line, may not look like much – but the 2800K, 180LM LED bulb and round aluminum body with an opal glass diffuser that rotates 120 degrees off center, allowing users to adjust the direction of light – may sweeten its minimal appeal. Another plus for hospitality designers? It’s ADA compliant.
The incandescent light bulb may have won a nine-month reprieve from Congress earlier this month, but energy-efficient decorative lighting—specifically LED lighting—is clearly not going away. Where do you think LED lighting is headed this year?

Loving all the fun colors I found on Cindy Davis‘ website this morning. You see, I have a little habit. Every morning, after taking my daughter to school at an ungodly hour – frankly, who came up with the idea that teenagers, of all people, have to be made to start school at 7am ? – and after making enough coffee to wake a family of sloths, I go talent searching online. Very often I start with new followers on Twitter, that’s right, I check almost everyone that follows me to see what they do. This is where I’ve found some of the most amazing artisans and designers over the past two years and this morning was an especially fun surprise that I decided to share with you. Cindy Davis Art is whimsical and her big, bold brush strokes just scream optimism and “hello day – here I am”. Above is “Pink Lemonade”, acrylic on canvas, inspired by “cupcakes, candy, and landscapes found in the Arkansas Ozarks”. Continue Reading…

We all know Patricia Urquiola for her amazing furniture and accessory design and the companies she’s lent her name and design skills to are the complete collection who is who in design, like Alessi, Boffi, B&B Italia, Cassina, Cappelini, Kartell and many more. So imagine my surprise when, while perusing the fabulous collections on Nilufar, I came across a piece of mixed media art, done by Patricia. The woman never ceases to amaze and this piece clearly deserves a spot on my coveted and slightly eccentric holiday wishlist.

Nilufar is an Italian gallery based in Milan who curate some of the world’s most amazing artifacts as well as vintage and antique pieces. One of my favorite has to be the Spirit House.
This Mid-20th Century piece is roughly 25″ in height, width and depth and made in Thailand. Spirit Houses were traditionally set outdoors to catch and house the local spirits that roam about in nature and are often quite weather worn but this one appears in excellent condition despite being about 50 years old.

LOVE THIS – there you go, blog post done. Well actually, I saw Eva Menz’ Free as a Bird chandelier and knew it had to be in my wish list line up simply because it’s fabulous. Only later did I notice the intricate detail about this piece. It’s an origami design made up of 1000 tyvek cranes, yes cranes and yes 1000 of them, see detail below. So yes, can I have one please? Have a look at the other images as well for more color options and the effect created when the piece is lit.

I just found this baseball leather briefcase on BlogTour NYC sponsor Spirit of Sports’ website and must say that, while I absolutely don’t understand the game I have always liked the feel of well worn baseball glove leather. Add to that the great color of this briefcase and already it finds itself on this most coveted of gift ideas lists. A great deal at $320 by the way and something this hard working, far traveling online resource CEO would be very happy with.

Cachepots – you can never have enough and you can never get wild enough with them. A perfect example for my new mantra in 2012 “embrace color and pattern in 2012 V” is the collection by decoupage master John Derian. The colors on the pot above “Floral Bouquet” intrigue me because of their muted, dusty quality. John, thank you for helping me embrace. I know the wishlist is all about one item a day, but frankly I couldn’t decide on my favorite one so I thought I’d share some more. Continue Reading…

I’ve loved Downtown 20 since the opened in 1996 and when I saw the Muirfield bench as a recommendation by Mary Douglas Drysdale in October’s Traditional Home, I knew it was going into this year’s Modenus’ Daily Wish List. It’s also available in black but I’m on a color kick at the moment which is highly unusual for me, so let’s celebrate it – while it lasts – with a few more pieces from Downtown 20.
Scoop Chair works indoors and out equally well and personally I’m having visions of a pristine white bathroom with one of these as an accent.

And hopefully not the last glimpse of color in my otherwise largely monochromatic world, LOVE these Red Chow nesting table. Love, love, love in fact.
For more of their designs or a fab collection of vintage pieces head on over to Downtown 20 and please tell them we need them on Modenus, to keep some color in V’s life.
