Bath design has just entered a new level of style/sex appeal/glamour or feel free to insert the attribute that best suits your first impression of Graff’s new AMETIS collection. The sleek shower column features rain head, body sprays, a dock for an optional hand shower and an integrated chromatherapy lighting system. To me, this is one of the most stunning bath fixture collections I’ve seen and I wholeheartedly applaud Graff for creating something that’s new, fresh, exhilarating and, dare I say it, different. Have a look below for more on AMETIS.
GRAFF has reached out to David Oppizzi of DCUBE to create the collection. To Davide, the design is “a symbol of the fusion between the Universe above and the oceans below; a futuristic ode to high design in the bathroom”.

Two rows of body sprays complement the rain head element without deterring from the shower’s sleek design for what I can only imagine to be a very gentle, embracing shower experience and I love the option of being able to switch from rain head to waterfall, all in a single element.

“Fluid and sensuous, AMETIS guides the water through the gentle curves of the faucet, providing a visual representation of the idea that life is a cycle” says Davide. I love the faucet design for it’s sculptural quality and the very appropriate use of highly polished chrome that emphasizes the faucet’s shadow play.

The faucet will be available in three finishes – polished chrome or powder coated matte black and white and it features an electronic system with a coloured ring which changes from red to blue and vice versa depending on changes in the water temperatures.
AMETIS won’t be available in the US until late Spring, early Summer but I can see where designers would want to start thinking about incorporating the collection in their upcoming concepts right now if they’re looking to wow a discerning client. Cost of the system: From $15,000 for the shower and from $1,500 for the faucet with LED option.

You already know we’re major bath lingerers and with so many great designs for tubs, showers and other bathroom fixtures, why wouldn’t we be? The bathroom has certainly become the second hub of the home, right after the kitchen; a private space where we can find reprieve from the buzz and stress of our daily lives. New technologies and design features bring us closer and closer to an authentic spa feeling at home, and help us relax or invigorate as needed. We’ve already seen chroma and hydro therapy and for 2012 we’re seeing the personal spa experience take on another level.
We’re talking about digital and wireless technologies here that allow users to customize their bath experience according to their personal preferences – from water temperature to music playlists, it’s your private time so make the most of it. Bluetooth is a popular option that people are using throughout the house and in their cars to stay connected so why not in the bath as well?
ThermaSol’s Serenity Light & Music System is one product that brings Bluetooth technology into the bath space – or specifically – the steam shower space. After all, how many times have you wished you could unwind to Handel’s Water Music or rev it up with Lady Gaga? Never? Well it’s about time you considered it.
Now that 2012 is here, I decided to ask Jari Ristola, President of ThermaSol, to give us a few insights on why the wireless bath is, uh-hum, gaining steam. (Sorry, couldn’t resist). Continue Reading…

Onyx, the ever intriguing, rare, semi-precious stone with its translucent layers and exotic bands of alternating color, is often the material of choice when a dramatic effect in a space is desired. The rich-looking stone has graced the most opulent hotels, palaces and residences for centuries, instantly transforming rooms from meek to chic. Even Cleopatra had a penchant for onyx!
Here’s a mini-wiki for those of you who need a few precious facts about this precious stone:
Origin: India and South America.
Uses: In ancient times, it was used for jewelry, vases and other ornaments. In interior design, translucent onyx is used for everything from furnishings and bath fixtures to countertops and floors.
History: Roman soldiers believed that the stone would make the wearer brave; and orators during the Renaissance believed it brought them eloquence.
Healing: Onyx has been used as a heart, kidney, nerve, capillary, hair, eye and nail strengthener; it is also said to help one sleep and eliminate apathy, stress and neurological disorders.
Mystical Powers: Onyx is known for eliminating negative thinking, and bringing spiritual inspiration.
And yes there will be a test at the end of this blog post so write this down.
Stone Forest, a manufacturer we’ve long coveted for their one-of-a-kind kitchen and bath designs sculpted from natural materials, utilizes onyx to incredible effect in their products. They work with huge varieties of the stone, including: honey, amber, purple, white and a dazzling multi-color. Have a look at some of our favorites and better yet, tell us which one you like the most.
Purple Onyx Wabi Vessel
Carved from small boulders of rare purple and green onyx, each onyx Wabi is one of a kind in terms of shape, size and color.

Modenus’ friend and regular guest contributor, journalist and social media consultant Saxon Henry visited the grand opening of INAX USA’s Manhattan Gallery last week.

The caveat “opposites attract” has been around a while where relationships are concerned—who amongst us hasn’t heard it when a courtship goes south? It’s the rare instance, however, when the the sage ism applies to design elements from a singular manufacturer. I walked into the showroom debut of INAX in Manhattan last week expecting to find lots of sleek white bowls of varying shapes and forms, and there were those aplenty—toilets, sinks and tubs in the round, the square and the beautifully fluted rectangular. But there was also a surprising textural playfulness going on within the long space that was an unexpected pleasure. It was the intermingling of bathroom fixtures with some of the most fabulous tile I’ve seen since covering Cersaie in Italy two years ago.

Here’s a cool design contest Modenus bath designers can sink their teeth into: ThermaSol® has announced a bathroom design contest that will award winners with a state-of-the-art ThermaSol Steam Shower. Aptly named “Project Steam,” the contest asks everyone from bath designers to style savvy homeowners who are in the process of a bathroom remodel to submit their project for consideration.
Contestants must submit a description and outline of their bathroom project, including the project’s location, square footage, floor plans, materials and photos, as well as a short description of how they envision incorporating a ThermaSol Steam Shower into their newly designed bathroom. Winners of Project Steam will be awarded a ThermaSol Steam Shower generator, control kit and retractable steam-head in the finish and design that matches their bathroom décor (valued at approximately $2,000). “Winners will be selected based on quality of design, scope of work and the inclusion of a ThermaSol Steam Shower in their bathroom design,” the guys at ThermaSol tell us. The Beverly faucet by Watermark Designs brings back Old Hollywood glam
Let’s be real: many of us in the design industry tend to favor modern clean lines over ornate and feminine. But the truth is, classic femininity and glamor never go out of style. Brooklyn-based bath manufacturer Watermark Designs recently proved this to be true with the debut of three new faucet collections: Anika, Haley and Beverly. The Beverly faucet (above) takes us back in time to when the screen was still silver and days were golden. Back to that Old Hollywood glam. Can’t you picture this faucet in a bath at the Beverly Hills Hotel or in Marilyn Monroe’s California home? The flair base and round, multi-faceted solid crystal levers totally accentuate the Monroe-esque curve of the spout. Uniting high polish finish and intricate detailing, all three collections exude a timelessness we can’t help but appreciate – no matter how modern our design sensibilities seem to lean

I was once challenged by a particularly precocious five year old. As she ran herself a tub I asked her if she ever wondered how the water got to be there. “Yeah, I know that”, she replied, thwarting my rendition of ‘Tap turns on the water’. “but how about the tap, eh, how did that get born?”. A career in the law, or maybe children’s television, no doubt awaits. In the meanwhile, for Emma, and anyone else who ever wondered, courtesy of Modenus’ Blogtour sponsors Samuel Heath, this is the story of a tap. We suspect not everyone does it with this degree of craft and care. Continue Reading…

DuVerre has been a Modenus favorite long before there was a Modenus. As a young and rebellious kitchen designer I was always on the lookout for great surface materials, unique hardware or that one cabinet finish that no one had ever used before – often to the dismay of my suppliers. With hardware there was never a question and one of my main go-to’s for unique and highly sculptural design was always DuVerre. So imagine my excitement when I heard DuVerre had decided to join Modenus’ new concept, Blogtour, as a sponsor; why it was a match made in heaven. Continue Reading…
